Duwamish River
The Duwamish people are the original inhabitants of the Seattle area. They’ve lived amongst the lakes and the sea for thousands of years. There were dozens of Duwamish and Coast Salish villages up and down the Sound when settlers arrived. However, they were quickly side lined in the name of industry. And even though Chief Seattle signed a treaty with the Federal Government in 1855, ceding thousands of acres to the Americans, the Duwamish tribe is not federally recognized. Today, a Duwamish Longhouse & Cultural Center stands along the River, close to the site of an historical village. Learn more about them here: https://www.duwamishtribe.org/
