Thor’s Well
Along the Oregon coast, just south of the town of Yachats, you’ll find a seemingly bottomless sinkhole known as Thor’s Well. When the tides are high you can see this natural spectacle on full display, with ocean water appearing to be sucked down into the hole, never to be seen again. In reality, the “drainpipe of the pacific” is only about 20ft deep, and likely started as an underwater cave that had its ceiling partially collapse. Today the phenomenon attracts tourists from all over, trying to catch a glimpse of the hole in action. Beware though, rogue waves and unpredictable tides make this attraction dangerous for people (and photography gear).
