The Sawtooth Wilderness

Deep in central Idaho are the Sawtooth Mountains. An extension of the Rockies, these mountains are dominated by mid-range peaks. There are more than 50 peaks between 10k and 10.75k ft. and another 70+ between 9k and 10k ft. However none reach 11k ft. or higher. The area has a long history of glaciation, although no glaciers exist today. It does receive perennial snowfall, with more than 200 snow fields mapped consistently each year.

The Sawtooths were named for the jagged peaks that poke through the forest canopy. These mountains are home to bears, moose, elk, mule deer, birds of prey and more. The geological make up of the range also lends itself to multiple waterways, whether they’re seasonal snow-melt rivers or alpine lakes. And with those come natural hot springs that dot the entire landscape.

Sun Valley

Sun Valley is a major resort near the town of Ketchum in central Idaho. Known for its world class skiing, it’s also where famous writer Ernest Hemingway committed suicide and is currently buried. Although a relatively small town, they have an outsized presence of (living) celebrities, with the likes of Ashton Kutcher, Mark Zuckerberg and Justin Timberlake owning homes in the area.
